Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t just about looking good—it’s about feeling good, too. For me, it’s even more personal. A few years ago, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, and it completely changed the way I see health and wellness. I quickly learned that when I nourish my body properly, I feel my best. But as a busy mom juggling a million things at once, I sometimes forget to prioritize myself. And when I don’t, my body lets me know.
Our bodies are always trying to communicate with us. When we’re exhausted, inflamed, or dealing with brain fog, those aren’t just random occurrences—they’re signs. Signals that something is off, that we need to slow down and listen. Over time, I’ve learned that small, daily habits make all the difference. Here are some simple but powerful ways to support your health, including some gut-friendly techniques, because as they say, "the gut is our second brain."
Drinking a glass of warm lemon water in the morning helps detoxify the liver, kickstart digestion, and provide a boost of vitamin C. It’s a simple way to hydrate and support gut health first thing in the morning.
Sitting for long periods can slow circulation and make inflammation worse. I try to get up every hour, stretch, and take a quick walk—even if it’s just around the house between mom duties. Movement keeps everything flowing, from digestion to energy levels.
When I stick to whole foods like leafy greens, lean proteins, and healthy fats, I feel my best. Processed foods and too much sugar? My body definitely notices. Incorporating gut-friendly foods like fermented veggies, bone broth, and yogurt helps balance my microbiome and keeps digestion running smoothly.
I used to think I could function on minimal sleep—until my body reminded me otherwise. Now, I aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep because rest is when our bodies heal. A nighttime routine with no screens, a cup of herbal tea, and a relaxing book makes all the difference.
Eating in a rush or while distracted (hello, mom life!) can wreak havoc on digestion. I’ve learned to slow down, chew my food thoroughly, and truly enjoy my meals. This not only prevents bloating but also helps my body absorb nutrients better.
Even a few minutes outside can reset my mood and energy levels. Sunlight boosts vitamin D, which is essential for immunity and gut health. Plus, being in nature is just good for the soul.
I’ll be honest—I love my coffee. But too much caffeine, especially on an empty stomach, can be hard on the gut and adrenal glands. I try to balance it out by drinking plenty of water, opting for matcha some days, and keeping my sugar intake low to avoid energy crashes.
The gut and brain are deeply connected, and when my gut is off, I feel it everywhere—fatigue, mood swings, brain fog, the works. Here are a few things that help:
Stress is one of the biggest triggers for my autoimmune symptoms, so I’ve had to be intentional about managing it. Whether it’s deep breathing, journaling, or just taking a few minutes to myself, I try to keep stress from taking over.
The biggest lesson I’ve learned? My body is always communicating. When I don’t take care of myself, it lets me know. When I do, I feel strong, energized, and capable. The key is paying attention and making small, sustainable choices every day.
Healthy living isn’t about perfection—it’s about balance. Some days I do everything “right,” and other days, I eat whatever my kids leave on their plates. And that’s okay. The goal is to create habits that support long-term well-being. If you’ve been feeling off lately, maybe it’s time to check in with yourself. Your body is always speaking—are you listening?
